Titled for Yayoi Kusama, who is the cat's pyjamas.
“Ari Up, leader of the pioneering post-punk band The Slits, would have turned 49 on Jan. 17. She died of cancer last October (read All Songs Considered contributor Carrie Brownstein’s remembrance here). In honor of the woman born Ariane Daniele Forster — not to mention my personal gateway drug into the world of post-punk — I’ve curated a mix of songs by other female artists inspired (both directly and indirectly) by her iconoclastic twist on punk, funk and rock ‘n’ roll.
These 56 tracks focus more on the rebellious and chaotic moments of the post-punk movement (we’ll save goth rock and industrial music for the sequel). All of the bands include women who played a vital role in helping punk evolve past its three-chord roots. Bands such as LiLiPUT and Essential Logic were just as unorthodox as Gang of Four or Wire, even taking their sounds a step further with shrieking vocals and saxophone. The noise and raw experimentation only intensified as Sonic Youth and Teenage Jesus and the Jerks — two New York bands with prominent female members — gained considerable followings.”
Ni-Hao! - Look at that (Peach) (via hexadecibel)
Japanese all-girl experimental punk band Ni Hao formed in Kyoto where the three initial members, twin bassists Yukari and Ariko, and drummer Reo, were at university, releasing their first homemade cassettes in 2000. The band carved a distinctive visual image for themselves, with each member adopting a color-coded stage name (Yukari Blue, Ariko Red, and Reo Green) and dressing accordingly when playing live. From the start, their sound drew comparisons with fellow Kansai experimentalists OOIOO, who shared Ni Hao’s playful yet nonsensical vocal utterances from numerous female singers, as well as their often avant-garde song constructions, which had their roots in Yukari’s studies of modern classical music.
Girl Crush is out! My story in the anthology, “Girl Crazy,” is a smutty intertextual epistolary yarn about 2 ex-riot grrrls in lust. It is also about negotiating disability, age differences, non-monogamy and s/m within the context of a new relationship. And about the feeling of being 21 and Brand New To a Scene and Into Everything and Hella Crushed Out On A Really Cool Girl and Getting the Girl. It’s probably my most chipper smut to date. And God, how I wish I’d thought to read it at Rebel Girl — woulda been perfect. Oh well, at least you can read it in this book. Thanks so much to the wonderful R. Gay for publishing this story I’m so proud of!
More at the Girl Crush blog. p.s. the word crush always makes me think of Darren Hayes.
CALL OUT FOR FIST FIGHT ZINE - still taking submissions, this is organised by my friends Eva and Rina.
fist fight is a zine about girls and every day fights, from physical confrontations at shows, to the fight for autonomy with medical professionals, or the fight against advertising to be body posi. it’s about girl gangs, and strong/weird female friendships.
It’s about feeling positive and strong. It’s about being inspired by other women on days when we’ve been feeling overwhelmed or defeated.
we want your contributions! we’re interested in your personal writing/essays/comics/art.
when you’re submitting, think about: whether it fits the theme and feel of fist fight (if you think it does, you’re probably right), whether you want to lay it out on the page or if you’re happy for us to do that, and a title.
you should also send a short (like 50 words or less) blurby bio-y type thing. totally mention your own projects so people can find you, if you want.
if you want more info, or want to check if what you you’re making fits the theme you can email rina.anxiety@gmail.com.post script: I just editted it because I copied this from the original post on FB about it and left it looking like i was organising it, i’m not - i’ve submitted things and am working on some more stuff if i can so that they have heaps of content to use.
